Ullakko oli jaettu kahteen osaan, joista toista käytettiin heinien säilytyspaikkana ja toista vilja- ja jauhomakasiinina. Kauppias Berghin kuoltua lahjoittivat perilliset hänen omaisuutensa konkurssiin. Kaupunki osti talon ja tontin aikeenaan kaunistaa kirkon ympäristöä. Kaupunki olisi tahtonut purkaa navetan, mutta se olisi edellyttänyt tontin laitonta jakamista. Lopulta selvisi, että navetta ei itse asiassa sijainnutkaan tontilla vaan sen ulkopuolella, jolloin se saatiin kaupungin toimesta purettua. Kaupunki halusi samalla myös Berghin entisen tontin viereisen tontin haltuunsa. Tontin omisti apteekkari Stenius, ja kaupunki olisi tahtonut lunastaa häneltä sen osan tontista, joka ulottui kirkkopuistoon. Lunastettavalla tontilla sijaitsi kuitenkin apteekkitoiminnalle välttämätön kellari, ja tämän seikan perusteella senaatti hyväksyi Steniuksen valituksen. Senaatti myös määräsi, että kyseessä olevaa osaa ei saa erottaa tontista niin kauan, kuin tontilla olevassa talossa harjoitetaan apteekkiliikettä. Vuonna 1875 hän laajensi toimintaansa perustaen kivihiomon ja 1880 turkistehtaan, jotka sijoitettiin entisen oluttehtaan tiloihin Tulliniemeen. Vuonna 1890 vanha oluttehtaan rakennus paloi, ja vuosien 1892-93 tienoilla Herman Renfors rakennutti uuden, ajanmukaisemman ja suuremman tehdasrakennuksen entisen paikalle. Vuonna 1902 viipurilainen Juho Huikuri anoi puolestaan lupaa perustaa panimo Kajaaniin. Kaupunkilaisilla oli ikäviä muistoja edellisistä oluttehtaista, ja he yrittivät kaikin keinoin vastustaa uuden tehtaan perustamista. Lopulta Huikuri sai luvan panimon perustamiseen. Kauaa hänenkään panimonsa ei pysynyt toiminnassa, sillä hän kuoli 16.11.1904 sairastettuaan keuhkotautia. Hänen poikansa Petter Huikuri jatkoi panimon pyörittämistä jonkin aikaa, mutta luovutti sen viimein konkurssiin. 8.5.1909 osti tehtailija Waldemar Sundblad tehdaslaitoksen palstatiloineen huutokaupalla, ja harjoitti siinä oluen panemista.
