Vuonna 1756 Kajaanin kirkonkokouksessa ehdotettiin, että joku "taitava naishenkilö" lähetettäisiin Tukholmaan opiskelemaan kätilöksi. Seurakuntalaiset puolestaan ehdottivat, että Tukholmalmasta palkattaisiin Kajaaniin oppinut kätilö. Näin ei kuitenkaan lopulta tehty. Vuodesta 1850 alkaen toimi kätilönä leipurin rouva Maria Mathilda Svedlin, jolla ei ollut tutkintoa mutta joka oli saanut taitonsa kokemuksen kautta. Hänen tehtävänään oli huolehtia linnan väen ja sen läheisyydessä asuvien ihmisten sielunhoidosta. Vuodesta 1613 linnansaarnaajana toimi Mathias Johannis ja hänen seuraajanaan Thomas Nikolai.
