Jyväskylässä toimi ainoa suomenkielinen seminaari. Herman Hallonblad puolisoineen lupasi lahjoittaa Sortavalan maalaiskuntaan Kymölän kylään perustamansa kansakoulun valtiolle sillä ehdolla, että koulu muutetaan opettajaseminaariksi. Sortavalan seminaari sai valtiopäivillä tarvittavan kannatuksen ja päätös keisarin vahvistuksen. Heikki Kukkonen, 1. elokuuta 1789 Ilomantsi – 5. marraskuuta 1866) oli suomalainen kirkonmies ja herätysjohtaja, Karjalan rukoilevaisliikkeen perustaja, uskonnollinen kirjailija ja kirjankustantaja. Hän myös suomensi hartauskirjoja ja arkkiveisuja. Liperin seurakunnassa toimiessaan hän osoitti erinomaista intoa, mutta hänen aiheuttamansa hengellinen levottomuus loukkasi esimiehiä, ja seurauksena oli pitkällinen oikeusjuttu, vuoden virkaero ja sakot. Samalla tarkastusmatkan tehnyt Porvoon piispa Johan Molander siirsi hänet 1826 Svartholman vankilalinnoituksen papiksi, mikä käytännössä tarkoitti vankeutta. Vankeusaika merkitsi Renqvistille mahdollisuutta syventää ajatuksiaan. Hän julkaisi ensimmäiset raittiusaiheiset kirjoituksensa. 1835 painettiin Renqvistin tunnetuin teos Viinan kauhistus ja samana vuonna hänet määrättiin kappalaiseksi Sortavalaan, missä toimessa pysyi kuolemaansa saakka.
