Hän myös suomensi hartauskirjoja ja arkkiveisuja.<br /><br />Liperin seurakunnassa toimiessaan hän osoitti erinomaista intoa, mutta hänen aiheuttamansa hengellinen levottomuus loukkasi esimiehiä, ja seurauksena oli pitkällinen oikeusjuttu, vuoden virkaero ja sakot. Samalla tarkastusmatkan tehnyt Porvoon piispa Johan Molander siirsi hänet 1826 Svartholman vankilalinnoituksen papiksi, mikä käytännössä tarkoitti vankeutta.<br /><br />Vankeusaika merkitsi Renqvistille mahdollisuutta syventää ajatuksiaan. Hän julkaisi ensimmäiset raittiusaiheiset kirjoituksensa. 1835 painettiin Renqvistin tunnetuin teos Viinan kauhistus ja samana vuonna hänet määrättiin kappalaiseksi Sortavalaan, missä toimessa pysyi kuolemaansa saakka. Kaupunkiseurakunnalla ei ollut omaa kirkkoa, vaan Sortavalan maaseurakunta ja kaupunkiseurakunta käyttivät yhteistä kirkkorakennusta. Ennen talvisotaa oli suunnitelmia oman kirkon rakentamiseksi, mutta ne eivät koskaan toteutuneet. Jatkosodan jälkeen suunniteltiin jälleen uutta kirkkoa. Sortavalan jäädessä rajan taakse, rakentaminen ei enää ollut mahdollista.
