Kätilöinä 1700-luvulla käytettiin tavallisesti naisia, joilla ei ollut koulutusta, vaan jotka olivat saaneet taitonsa kokemuksen kautta. Vuonna 1756 Kajaanin kirkonkokouksessa ehdotettiin, että joku "taitava naishenkilö" lähetettäisiin Tukholmaan opiskelemaan kätilöksi. Seurakuntalaiset puolestaan ehdottivat, että Tukholmalmasta palkattaisiin Kajaaniin oppinut kätilö. Näin ei kuitenkaan lopulta tehty. Vuodesta 1850 alkaen toimi kätilönä leipurin rouva Maria Mathilda Svedlin, jolla ei ollut tutkintoa mutta joka oli saanut taitonsa kokemuksen kautta. Vasta hänen kuoltuaan 1882 saatiin Kajaaniin koulutettu kätilö, neiti Lovisa Hukkanen. Hän toimi kätilönä parikymmentä vuotta, ja kuoli Kajaanissa 1910.
