Osa Eino Leinon Kainuu-aiheisista runoista on suorastaan autenttisia kainuulaisen maiseman kuvauksia, mutta joissakin runoissa kainuulaisia paikannimiä vilahtelee väljemmässä merkityksessä. Esimerkiksi veljekset Oterma ja Katerma esiintyvät saman nimisessä runossa, mutta nimillä viitataan henkilöhahmoihin eikä kainuulaisiin paikannimiin. Tällaiset runot on jätetty kokoelmasta pois.
